Septoplasty Surgery Solutions in Surprise, AZ
Can You Benefit From Septoplasty Surgery?
The septum is made of cartilage and bone and it separates the right and left side of the nose. To provide the best support to the nasal structures, as well as define the tip, the septum should be exactly in the middle of the nose. Most people have nasal septums that are slightly off-center while some people have nasal septums that are severely crooked. Regardless of the severity, this condition is known as a deviated septum. What is Septoplasty Surgery?
Septoplasty surgery, which is also referred to as deviated septum surgery, is a simple procedure that can revise deviations and relocate the septum to its anatomically correct position in the center of the nose. This procedure can alleviate certain health concerns associated with deviated septums including:
- Breathing issues
- Facial pain/tenderness
- Headaches
- Nosebleeds
- Postnasal drip
- Sinus pressure
- Sleep apnea
- Snoring
What Can Cause a Deviated Septum?
Some people are born with deviated septums and some acquire them later in life. This condition can be caused by a prenatal injury or stress that transpires during childbirth. Damage can also be done to a septum during a fall, a sports injury or an accident.
What Happens During Septoplasty?
First, your doctor will determine the severity of your deviated septum and if a procedure is necessary. You’ll learn about the procedure and discuss the medications you’re currently taking, any bleeding problems you may have, and any allergies. This will allow your doctor to alter the procedure or your routine in order to accommodate your individual needs.
Normally, septoplasty only takes one to two hours as an outpatient procedure and allows patients to return home the same day. For the procedure, you will either be placed under general or local anesthesia; general will keep you asleep whereas local will keep your nasal area numb throughout surgery. The surgeon will access your septum through one side of your nose via an incision to lift the mucous membrane that covers the septum. From there, they will reshape the cartilage and bone, reposition the mucous membrane, and use splints or soft packing to protect the nasal tissue as it heals.
Septoplasty Recovery Expectations
After your procedure, you will be moved to a recovery room to allow the anesthesia to wear off and get you prepared to be accompanied home. A trusted adult should stay with you for at least 24 hours to make sure there are no complications. In order to start healing properly, your doctor may provide pain medication along with postoperative instructions for pain management. Avoiding exercise and other strenuous activities is best to allow for recovery and healing. Your doctor will let you know when it is safe to resume your regular activities.
Risks of Septoplasty
With any surgery, there are always associated risks. In regards to septoplasty, some of the risks include:
- Change in nose shape
- Decreased smelling ability
- Excessive bleeding
- Fluid build-up
- Scarring
The best ways to avoid these risks and enjoy the results of your septoplasty are to select the right surgical team and follow all postoperative care instructions.
